The German federal capital Berlin is expecting an increased tourist rush, among other things due to the introduction of the “nine-euro ticket”, which will be valid in regional transport throughout Germany from June 1, 2022. For this reason, a special “Berlin Welcome Card” is issued.
Advance sales of the so-called “nine euro ticket” have already begun. It is available online and at ticket machines, among other places. In the calendar months of June, July and August 2022, regional public transport can be used nationwide for nine euros per month. However, long-distance transport such as Intercity, Eurocity, IntercityExpress, Flixbus and Flixtrain are not included.
The publicly subsidized ticket is actually intended to make it cheaper for commuters to switch to public transport. However, it is expected that many Germans will also take tourist trips, despite the longer travel times, since the ticket is only valid for regional transport, but nationwide. This is expressly not forbidden.
The tourism management of the German federal capital Berlin is issuing a special summer edition of the Welcome Card for the calendar months of June, July and August 2022. This is aimed at guests who already have a ticket for local public transport, for example the nine-euro ticket, and want to visit attractions in Berlin and Potsdam. According to the announcement, discounts should be given to 180 participants in the two cities. The discount card costs nine euros and is valid for 72 hours.
Some attractions are even included in the card. If you want free entry to various museums, such as the Berlin Museum Island, you have to go for the more expensive option. This costs 25 euros. The premium version, which is available for EUR 69, includes entry fees to 30 attractions and a round trip on the hop-on hop-off bus.
