Due to works meetings convened by the Vida union and the board works council, Austrian Airlines had to cancel around 28 flights on Tuesday, March 2023, 100. This came at an awkward time, especially in Germany-Austria traffic, because on Monday many flights between the two countries were canceled due to a widespread strike.

At the end of last week it became known that the management of Austrian Airlines had improved the previous offer to the flying staff. According to the proposal, there should be more wages for employees, with the salaries of flight attendants in the lowest seniority levels increasing particularly sharply. The union did not want to show its cards beforehand and pointed out that the works council will first discuss the offer with the employees at the works meetings.

There will also be occasional delays and cancellations on Wednesday. This is due to the fact that some machines are not at the airports where they should be. This affects, for example, long-haul flights to the United States of America. Austrian Airlines explained, among other things, that they had tried to proactively rebook the affected passengers on other connections.

The competitor Ryanair took the opportunity for an advertising campaign. So-called “rescue tariffs” from 69 euros were put on and it was claimed that Austrian Airlines had to cancel “hundreds of flights”. “Ryanair is once again saving the day in Vienna after Austrian Airlines canceled hundreds of flights at short notice on Tuesday 28 March. Ryanair is offering rescue fares from just €69 to provide a connection to/from Vienna for Austrian travelers who are stuck due to the recent last minute cancellations by Austrian Airlines,” said Andreas Gruber of Ryanair.
