On January 2, 2024, the Airbus A320 operated by British Airways with the registration G-EUYH was on its way from Gibraltar to London Heathrow. Due to smoke developing in the cockpit, a safety landing had to be made in Nantes, France.
The medium-haul jet was carrying out a routine flight from Gibraltar to the UK's largest airport. Shortly before reaching the English Channel, the pilots noticed a smoke-like smell in the cockpit. Smoke was also said to have been visible. The flight direction was changed and a safety landing was requested at Nantes Airport in France. The pilots are said to have used their oxygen masks as a precaution, but they were not deployed in the passenger compartment.
The G-EUYH was then able to touch down safely there. All passengers and crew members were able to leave the Airbus A320 safely. The affected jet was temporarily taken out of service because an extensive technical examination was necessary. A replacement plane was sent to Nantes for the passengers, but not until the following day. Until then, the travelers were accommodated in a hotel.
But the replacement aircraft also caused problems because the commander discovered defects that had to be corrected. This resulted in the involuntary stay in Nantes being extended accordingly. In the meantime, the G-EUYH has also been repaired and is back in regular service. British Airways did not provide any specific information about the exact cause.
