The corona lull continues: Last month, exactly 186.924 passengers used Brussels Airport - 91 percent fewer people than in 2019. The cargo volume, however, continues to recover.

The passenger numbers are comparable to February, the weakest month since the beginning of the pandemic. “The last twelve months have gnawed at the entire industry. Light recovery was always short-lived, ”said Airport boss Arnaud Feist. For the next few weeks and months he would like the restrictions to be lifted quickly for countries in which the overall situation is comparable to or better than Belgium. "This is the only way we can fly out of the crisis."

In the air freight sector, things look very different. The cargo volume in March shows a sharp increase in the quantities carried. Compared to 2020 and 2019, this value increased by 41 and 27 percent, respectively. During the pandemic, Brussels has become the most important export airport for corona vaccines in Europe. Several million corona vaccine doses have been flown out from here.
