The European Union gives the green light: Germany is allowed to support airports affected by the pandemic with grants. The airport operations must be secured in order to guarantee connections, mobility and air traffic, the EU authority announced on Tuesday.
“This regulation will enable the German authorities (...) to compensate German airports for losses they suffered as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. At the same time, it will help the airports to overcome their liquidity bottlenecks and weather the crisis, ”said EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager.
It is intended that corona-related failures at German airports will be compensated with donations, such as zeit.de reported. This is strictly checked by the authorities. Otherwise, aid that exceeds the actual damage would have to be repaid.
