The German Bundeswehr has taken delivery of the second Airbus A321LR converted by Lufthansa Technik. This bears the registration 15+11 and was transferred from Hamburg to Cologne/Bonn on Wednesday.

In June 2022, the Air Force with the 15+10 get the first A321LR. The two machines are used as troop carriers, but also for parliamentary flight operations on short, medium and long-haul routes. The newcomers to the Bundeswehr have a maximum capacity of 136 passengers.

As part of a small ceremony at the Lufthansa Technik base in Hamburg, all those involved officially bid farewell to the aircraft last Friday. Not only the project team from Lufthansa Technik was invited, but also the personnel involved from the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Federal Armed Forces (BAAINBw), the Defense Technical Service 61 and the Air Force, which also the 15+11 previously had a subjected to an intensive test and acceptance program. With its completion, the first phase of the modification project is now complete.

In the coming year, however, both A321LRs will return to Lufthansa Technik in order to be modified and approved for the so-called MedEvac set-up role in the second project phase. This expands the operational spectrum of the aircraft to include capabilities for qualified air transport of the wounded, those injured in accidents and the sick. Within this framework, the transport of up to six intensive care patients or up to twelve mildly or moderately ill/injured patients will be possible in three different configurations in the future. For this purpose, Lufthansa Technik will deliver a total of twelve units and two reserve units of the New Generation Patient Transport Unit (PTE NG) to the German Armed Forces. The company was able to complete various preparatory work for the MedEvac application, for example for the oxygen supply on board the two aircraft, in the first project phase
