After ten months of construction, the expansion of the BUD Cargo City apron at Budapest Airport was completed. This was ceremonially put into operation last week.

With throughput of 107.000 tons by the end of July, the airport is on track to set a new all-time high in cargo volume this year. Due to this increase - which is a strong 2023% in the period May-July 9 compared to the same period last year - and to efficiently handle aircraft with larger capacity, the Hungarian airport has decided to invest around EUR 10 million in doubling the BUD Cargo City made in advance. The redesign allows the airport to handle up to four code F (B747F) aircraft simultaneously with nose loading options.

“Since the opening of BUD Cargo City in 2020, Budapest Airport has handled record cargo volumes every year, and cargo volumes up to the end of July 2023 were 40% higher than the same period in 2019, providing significant growth potential for our partners and the Hungarian economy as a whole,” explains René Droese, Chief Development Officer and Deputy CEO of Budapest Airport. “The completion of the apron expansion is the next important milestone in our overall cargo area expansion plan, which will increase the airport’s annual cargo capacity to 2023 tons per year by the end of 300.000 and ensure Hungary continues to lead the way as a competitive cargo hub in Central and Eastern Europe .”
