The German airports in Dresden and Leipzig together counted 918.341 passengers in the previous year, which is 78,2 percent below the figure for 2019. Dresden accounted for 385.651 passengers and Leipzig for 532.690 passengers.

In the freight sector, an 11,7 percent increase was achieved at the Leipzig location. A new record was even set with 1.383.485 tons of air freight. Growth increased particularly significantly in the fourth quarter. In December alone, the freight volume increased by 35,0 percent to around 140.940 tons.

“We can count ourselves lucky that we are continuing to attract stable business for the entire group of companies, especially with our air freight. We expect further cargo growth in 2021 and a gradual recovery in passenger numbers as soon as travel restrictions ease. Then Dresden Airport will benefit significantly, which had temporarily come out of the crisis well in the spring, ”says Götz Ahmelmann, CEO of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG.

The signs in air freight are also pointing upwards for the current year. Both the liner and the cargo charter business are developing positively. The transport of medical supplies and protective equipment will also play an important role. This includes the possibility of handling vaccines in Leipzig / Halle. Thanks to CEIV Pharma certification, the airport is able to handle temperature and time-critical pharmaceutical shipments around the clock. A total of around 60 freight airlines head for the airport and serve a route network that includes over 280 destinations worldwide.
