The EU Commission would like to reintroduce the slot regulations to a limited extent from summer. Carsten Spohr rejects this approach.

For the Lufthansa boss, the introduction comes far too early. That is why he is now actively involved in the debate - and reacts to the proposals from Brussels with threats. “We would do anything to keep our slots up. Any responsible management would do the same, ”he says airliners.de quoted. The EU is toying with the fact that at least 40 percent of the slots must be used from the summer flight schedule. Otherwise the take-off and landing rights of the airlines will vanish into thin air.

In view of the currently rather subdued recovery in air traffic, Spohr does not expect to be able to meet these requirements. Instead, he sees himself forced to empty empty flights that are harmful to the environment. On the one hand, the EU wants to reduce the CO2 footprint, but at the same time is forcing the airlines to stick to the rule to empty flights, said the CEO of the crane airline. The slot rules were and are worldwide suspended due to the Corona crisis. In normal times, slots must be used to at least 80 percent so that they can continue to be used. Otherwise they will be reassigned by the supervisory authorities.
