The largest airline in the Chinese Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Cathay Pacific, was hit hard last year by the corona pandemic and the strict entry and quarantine rules. The carrier had only 717.059 passengers.
This was again significantly weaker than in 2020. In the first Corona year, there were at least 4,6 million travelers on board. For comparison: In 2019 there were 35,2 million passengers. As a result, Cathay Pacific has been hit by the pandemic and Hong Kong's immigration and quarantine regulations on an unprecedented scale.
In the cargo area, the level of 2020 was maintained and around 1,3 million tons were on board. However, this was also well below the volume of 2019, because back then there were around two million tons of cargo. As a result, Cathay Pacific could not really benefit from the partially increased demand.
The group currently expects the loss in the previous year to be between 5,6 and 6,1 billion Hong Kong dollars. The balance sheet is currently undergoing the usual audit and has therefore not yet been audited at the current time. The deficit could be reduced compared to 2020, when it closed with a minus of 21,6 billion Hong Kong dollars.
