The airline Cathay Pacific, based in the Chinese special administrative region of Hong Kong, managed to fly into the profit zone in 2023. The carrier announced a surplus of $1,3 billion.

Previously, the carrier was deeply in the red for three years. First, the demonstrations, which also took place at Hong Kong Airport, had a negative impact and then came the corona pandemic. The People's Republic of China and its Special Administrative Region have practiced particularly restrictive measures over a long period of time. At times, flying personnel were placed in quarantine for several weeks after just one flight.

Cathay Pacific ended 2022 with a loss of $840 million. In 2023, the company claims to have benefited from the fact that demand has skyrocketed. Sales are said to have increased to $12 billion in the recently completed business period. The high demand also meant that comparatively high average ticket prices were achieved.

The offer was expanded by 2023 percent in 326,8. Passenger kilometers sold even improved by 396,8 percent. There was a setback in the cargo sector, as the freight division recorded a decline of 17,9 percent. The group explains that this would only be purely mathematical, because many routes that were offered as pure cargo routes during the pandemic are now available again as belly cargo and are therefore included in the passenger division.

Cathay-Pacific had around 2023 million passengers on board in 18. This meant an increase of 541,4 percent in direct comparison to the previous period. Utilization improved from 73,6 percent to 85,7 percent. According to its own information, it was the first profit since the 2019 financial year. The carrier also admitted that the amount was very positively influenced by the fact that demand was significantly higher than supply, meaning that tickets could be sold at a comparatively high price.
