From October 3rd, the runway center (25C/07C) at Frankfurt Airport will be out of service for around two weeks for the replacement of the asphalt surface layer. The asphalt surface, which is four centimeters thick, has to be renewed about every ten years due to wear and weather-related damage.

Work on the center track will start on Monday, October 3rd at 23 p.m. The work is scheduled to end on the night of October 16th to 17th, so that the first aircraft can take off and land again on the center runway around six o'clock on October 17th. Around 80.000 square meters of the surface will be renewed, according to the airport operator in a press release. That's roughly the size of ten soccer fields. Runway South (07R/25L) will remain in operation during the construction work, as will Runway Northwest (07L/25R) and Runway 18 West. The airport operator is also using the closure to replace more than 130 old halogen lights along the runway with energy-saving and long-lasting LED lights.
