Since the beginning of the corona pandemic, the City Airport Train has no longer operated on its regular route between the Wien-Mitte Landstrasse train station and the Vienna-Schwechat Airport. The wagons of the Vienna Airport Express train are used at the other end of Austria, in Vorarlberg.

The strikingly painted trains of the City-Airport-Train have not been running as scheduled from Vienna-Schwechat Airport since March 2020. In spring 2022 they want tackle the restart, however, there is no specific date yet. However, the wagons in which tourists, business people, airline and airport employees usually travel from the city center to the airport (and vice versa) do not stand still.

The CAT trains can be found in Vorarlberg. The sets are used there as regional trains for the Austrian Federal Railways. There are also some wagons for ÖBB in regional traffic in the eastern region. There is a reason for this: The state railway has rented the rolling stock for the City Airport Train.

The express connection, which is currently paused, is a joint venture between Flughafen Wien AG and the Austrian Federal Railways. So it is obvious that the ÖBB should help their participation by renting the wagons. But that's not entirely selfless, because the Austrian Federal Railways lack modern rolling stock due to a messed up order for multiple units, especially in Vorarlberg. Thus the CAT wagons jump in temporarily.

A spokeswoman for the City Airport Train said on request: “The CAT sets are currently still in use both in Vorarlberg and in eastern Austria at the ÖBB. The trains are run by ÖBB staff, only the wagons are rented out ”.
