In the future, the City Airport Train will run with Stadler Kiss trains, as three five-car trains have been ordered from the Swiss manufacturer. These will be delivered from 2027 and will replace the previous locomotive-hauled wagons.

In the future, capacity for up to 300 passengers will be available per train. The new railcars will have a top speed of up to 200 km/h, although this will probably not be possible between Vienna-Mitte Landstrasse and Vienna-Schwechat Airport.

According to official information, there are currently an average of 4.000 passengers per day. In the last 20 years since operations began, there have been around 20 million passengers. The City Airport Train is not part of the Eastern Region Transport Association and free travel is not possible even with the climate ticket. Tickets at the local tariff are required. These are more expensive than the express train or the Railjet.

“The new trains are particularly tailored to the needs of air travelers: there will be enough storage space for their luggage, the aisles are wider and there will be first class seating with extra wide seats throughout. There is also a separate security area for luggage checked in at the CAT City Check-In. “, explain CAT managing directors Michael Forstner and Christoph Korherr. “With the significant increase in capacity, we are responding to the fortunately continuous increase in the number of air travelers to and from Vienna in recent years who appreciate the comfort of an airport express train with international standards. The version as a double-decker wagon, for which the CAT has been known and popular for 20 years, will be retained,” add the two CAT managing directors.

The most recent investment is the renovation of the CAT terminal in Vienna Mitte. Here, the areas for the city check-in, where luggage drop-off, check-in and boarding pass printing are available exclusively to CAT customers, have been comprehensively renovated and redesigned for even more intuitive use.

“The KISS in its modern and aerodynamic long-distance transport design acts as an impressive flagship for the passengers of the City Airport Train. We are therefore very pleased to be able to supply the modern and high-capacity KISS double-decker concept for the busy route between the airport and Vienna city center. The KISS features 300 seats, maximum seating comfort, a modern passenger information system with real-time data and an LED light design, ensuring a pleasant journey with the airport express,” says Christian Diewald, Managing Director of Stadler Austria GmbH.
