With the exception of Frankfurt am Main, security checks at commercial airports in Germany are carried out by private security service providers on behalf of the Federal Police. Cologne/Bonn is now suggesting that – similar to Frankfurt – this could be done on your own.

The latter airport is currently one of those hotspots in Germany where the effects of the staff shortage are particularly noticeable for passengers. There are always hours of waiting at the security checkpoints. The management of Konrad-Adenauer-Flughafen is obviously very dissatisfied with this situation.

In an interview with the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, airport boss Thilo Schmid explains that they are prepared to take on responsibility for the security checks. There is also a willingness to invest money in the technical equipment "in order to speed up the processes". The manager also told the newspaper: "We as an airport are ready to take responsibility for the controls. That also means that we can have a say in the decisions and should have an influence on the organization of the controls”.

It is not true that security checks at commercial airports in Germany are currently only carried out by private security service providers on behalf of the Federal Police.

The security checks at the international Westphalian airports in Dortmund, Münster-Osnabrück and Paderborn as well as the regional airport in Siegerland are the responsibility of the North Rhine-Westphalian district government in Münster. So far there have been no major disruptions at the airports in Westphalia.
