Construction work in the Ruhr area: Restrictions for rail travelers and airport passengers

Extensive construction work began on the railway line between Essen and Dortmund on Friday evening, March 1, 2025. The work is expected to last until April 25, 2025 and will have a significant impact on rail traffic in the Ruhr area. In particular, travelers who want to arrive via or depart from Düsseldorf Airport must expect restrictions, as only a few long-distance trains will stop at the airport due to the diversions.

Deutsche Bahn has announced that the affected sections of the route will be temporarily closed during the construction work, which will lead to massive diversions and in some cases longer travel times. Travelers should be prepared for additional transfer connections and longer travel times. Due to this construction work, Düsseldorf Airport, an important transport hub, will temporarily have significantly less direct connections to long-distance transport. Deutsche Bahn recommends that passengers plan for additional travel times in good time and find out about alternative connections in advance.

The construction work is part of a long-term infrastructure project by Deutsche Bahn, which aims to modernize and improve the network in the Ruhr area. Despite the inconvenience for travelers, Deutsche Bahn expects an improvement in timetable stability and an increase in capacity in the long term.
