Berlin-Brandenburg Airport handled 264.987 passengers in December of the previous year. In direct comparison with November 2020, there were around 25 percent more passengers, which is mainly due to the Christmas season. Compared to December 2019, however, the decrease was almost 90 percent.

The number of flight movements was around 4.600 take-offs and landings last month. In December 2019, at that time still at the two airport locations Tegel and Schönefeld, more than 2,6 million passengers could be handled, the number of flight movements was just under 21.200.

In the whole of 2020, 9,1 million travelers use an airport location in the capital region (TXL, SXF and BER). This means that in the year of the corona pandemic, around a quarter of the number of travelers in the record year 2019 was recorded. With 105.000 aircraft movements, the decrease in 2020 was around two thirds compared to the previous year, when almost 289.000 aircraft took off or landed at Tegel and Schönefeld airports. The main reason for the decline in the number of passengers is the corona pandemic and the associated travel restrictions. At the same time as the virus spread around the world from March onwards, passenger numbers plummeted.

“A year of extremes ends with the turn of the year. On the one hand, we were finally able to successfully open BER, on the other hand, the number of passengers has plummeted due to the pandemic. The difficult global situation has shown how important a good freight infrastructure is for the capital region. Because, unlike the number of passengers, the amount of freight has also decreased, but it has not collapsed as much as passenger traffic, ”says BER boss Engelbert Lütke Daldrup.

The air freight volume in December 2020 was around 1.900 tons, which is the same as in November. Compared to the same month last year, the volume has decreased by around a third. For the year as a whole, the cargo volume was a good 22.000 tons after almost 35.000 tons in 2019, which corresponds to a decrease of just over a third.
