A total of 1.692.960 passengers used Dortmund Airport last year. That was 39 percent more than in 2020. Due to the pandemic, the airport has not yet been able to match the passenger numbers of the record year 2019. At that time, around 2,7 million passengers started or ended their journey in Dortmund.

"We are pleased that the airport was able to achieve values like in the pre-crisis year 2019 in the summer months. In a nationwide comparison, the airport recovered particularly quickly from the corona-related slumps in spring. Nevertheless, the low number of passengers in the spring could no longer be compensated for over the whole year,” sums up the airport manager Ludger van Bebber. In the winter months, the number of passengers decreased again due to the occurrence of the omicron virus variant.

The number of passengers increased significantly during the North Rhine-Westphalian Christmas holidays compared to the previous year. 108.696 passengers used Dortmund Airport to travel around the public holidays. Overall, the number of passengers approached the value of 2019 again. At that time, the airport recorded 115.122 passengers. In 2020, the number of passengers fell to 29.076 due to the pandemic.

“The holiday values are pleasing. The development in summer also shows that people want to travel more again. We hope that the pandemic situation will ease as soon as possible, so that we can soon be able to live more everyday life again - also in the form of travel. We are pleased that we were able to significantly increase the number of passengers again this year," says airport manager Ludger van Bebber, looking to the future with confidence. For the coming summer of 2022, 53 destinations in 25 countries have already been set. Dortmund Airport is thus offering a similarly extensive range of services as last summer.
