In June 2022, German commercial airports achieved around 73 percent of the volume that was in the same month of 2019. Compared to June 2022, the use of the airports has increased by 213,6 percent.

There were declines in the freight sector: 420.102 tons were handled throughout Germany. This was 6,5 percent below the value reached in June 2021, but 7,9 percent above the month before the crisis.

At 160.847 take-offs and landings, the number of commercial flight movements was almost twice as high as in June 2021 (+87,9%); compared to 2019, more than three quarters of all commercial flights were carried out again at -21,4%. In European traffic, the volume was tripled compared to 2021. The 12,64 million passengers mean an increase of +205,6% compared to the previous year. Compared to the pre-crisis level of 2019, this is more than four fifths of travelers (81,0%).

Intercontinental demand grew by +285,0% to over 2,66 million passengers compared to the previous year. Compared to June 2019, more than two thirds of travelers are transported (70,8%). The importance of domestic air traffic continues to decrease. With 1,93 million domestic German passengers (+195,5% compared to 2021), demand has fallen below the 2 million mark again and has thus reached slightly more than half of the pre-crisis volume (52,1%).

Demand in the first half of 2022 significantly higher than in the same period of the previous year

From January to June 2022, more than 68,72 million passengers (arr.+dep.) were counted at German airports. At +326,7%, the airports recorded intensive growth compared to the previous year. However, the pre-crisis level in 2019 is still 42,3% short.

8,35 million passengers flew within Germany (+264,3% on the previous year, compared to Jan-Jun 2019 this corresponds to a loss of -64,0%). 48,53 million passengers use European traffic at German airports (+342,3% compared to the previous year, compared to Jan-Jun 2019 it is -33,8%). The intercontinental demand (11,68 million passengers) grew by +326,0% compared to the previous year (compared to Jan-Jun 2019 it is -43,1%).

In the first two months of the year, the omicron variant prevented many travel occasions by plane. A different picture has emerged since March. The highly dynamic recovery in demand reflects the high backlog demand, especially for tourist travel. The desire for mobility and holiday travel is unbroken and is causing passenger numbers to skyrocket. Demand will develop at a high level over the summer months and the holiday season.

European transport is the driving force behind traffic development. Tourist and VFR demand in some European destinations is already back at pre-crisis levels or even higher. The gradual expansion of the offer of the intercontinental connections promotes the development of the volume. The number of feeders to the German hubs also benefits from this. The Asian traffic, which has still not been resumed to a large extent, prevents an even better development in this market segment. In contrast, traffic within Germany continues to lag behind these developments.

Air freight demand was also at a high level in June, but is still declining. At 420.102 tons, around 12.000 tons less freight were handled compared to the previous month of May. Compared to June 2021, the rate of change is -6,5%. The Russia-Ukraine war with the airspace closures over Russia for German and EU carriers and the important freight markets in Japan, South Korea and China, which are still severely restricted due to corona, are pushing the overall result down. The difficult overall economic situation with the great uncertainties is putting a strain on the global supply chains.

Invitations fell by -6,6% to 216.315t (compared to 2019 +9,1%). The outreach also decreased by -6,5% to 203.752t (compared to 2019 +6,6%). In the cumulative view of the year 2022, the cargo volume developed by -3,2% to 2.560.245 tons - but compared to the pre-crisis level in 2019, this means +7,1% and an additional almost 180.000 tons.
