In 2020, the German Ministry of Finance suffered a sharp drop in revenue from the controversial air traffic tax due to the corona pandemic and the associated entry and quarantine restrictions. There was a slight recovery in the previous year.

In 2021, the Federal Republic of Germany received 526,4 million euros from the taxation of flight tickets. This is still well below the level of revenue it had before the crisis, but significantly above the level of 2020, according to figures published by Germany's Federal Statistical Office.

The increase compared to 2020 is reported at 49,8 percent. It was 55,7 percent below the income it had in the record year 2020. Germany introduced the controversial aviation tax in 2011, raising rates in the midst of the pandemic. This was sharply criticized by airlines and airlines. Austria too raised the local ticket tax in 2020.
