Not only is aviation in Germany still far ahead of the volume that it had before the corona pandemic, but bus companies also still have significantly fewer passengers in travel. The decline compared to 2019 remains enormous.
The Federal Statistical Office recently published the latest figures. These show that 2022 million passengers traveled by coach in 37. In direct comparison with the volume the industry had in 2019, there was a decline of 52 percent. Long-distance bus services that are offered as part of line concessions are not taken into account.
The corona pandemic is also likely to have left a completely different mark, as the authority's figures suggest that some providers did not survive the crisis. In 2019, there were still 2.970 bus companies that offered trips with their vehicles. Last year there were only 2.720 units - a reduction of eight percent.
Fewer passengers also mean less driving. This can also be seen from the figures from the Federal Statistical Office. In the previous year, German coach operators only covered around half of the 16.7 billion passenger kilometers that they had in the last year before the pandemic.
There are no valid figures yet for the current year 2023. However, very different things are being heard from the industry. Some operators report that additional trips were even able to be arranged and others claim to have noticed that air travel was particularly popular in the summer of 2023.
