The German airports counted a total of 2.033.947 passengers in December of the previous year. In direct comparison with 2019, this is 87,9 percent fewer travelers. The freight volume rose by 13 percent to 449.226 tons, announced the association ADV.
In domestic German traffic, a decrease of 89,9 percent was recorded. There were 87,4 percent fewer passengers on European flights. The long haul had 87,8 percent fewer passengers on board. The number of commercial flight movements fell by -69,2 percent to 47.747 take-offs and landings.
“The year 2020 will end with a further decline in air traffic demand for air traffic demand at German airports. The tightened lockdown from the middle of December, combined with the political request to refrain from unnecessary travel during the Christmas holidays, depresses the already low demand. Despite the occasional positive booking figures in a few tourist destinations, the industry's weak hopes for a slight recovery in demand during the Christmas holidays were not fulfilled. The flight bans to Great Britain and South Africa also slowed any possible recovery. The airports remained in lockdown even at the turn of the year, far from being economically viable. The start of the new year will not bring about any changes in trend - the economic situation of the airports, which nonetheless fulfill their traffic function for the provision of general interest, remains critical and tense, "explains the ADV:
In the freight sector, the unloading increased by 16,3 percent to 219.407 tons. 10,1 percent more cargo was loaded. According to ADV, there were a total of 2020 tons in December 229.817. “The air freight development continues the positive trend and is growing very significantly towards the end of the year. The reasons for this are the stabilizing trade flows and the Christmas business, especially in online trading. In addition to the current positive trend in the development of the demand for cargos, the base effect is also reflected in relation to the timing of the Christmas holidays before the end of the year ”, writes the ADV.
