Five years after its founding amidst one of the most severe crises in aviation history, the German leisure airline Discover Airlines is making a significant statement about its long-term market position. With the largest single investment in the company's history, its entire long-haul fleet, consisting of 16 Airbus A330-300 aircraft, is undergoing a complete cabin refurbishment.
This step marks the transition from a young start-up airline to a fully established premium leisure carrier within the Lufthansa Group. The new cabin concept, operating under the name Ocean Blue, introduces state-of-the-art onboard products in all three travel classes. The first retrofitted aircraft will enter service in April 2027, with completion of the entire modernization program planned for mid-2028. With investments in the hundreds of millions, the airline is responding to the increased demands in the high-end tourism segment and simultaneously harmonizing its hardware with the standards of its parent company, without losing its independent character as a leisure airline.
Technological evolution and design philosophy of the Ocean Blue cabin
The choice of the name Ocean Blue is far more than a purely aesthetic one; it represents a conscious connection to the airline's founding phase, which began in 2020 under the project name Ocean. Even today, the airline's pilots use the call sign OCN on international air traffic control radio. The design of the new cabin draws on this history with deep blue hues and clean, elegant lines, creating a high-quality ambiance. The aim is to evoke a holiday feeling the moment passengers board the aircraft, while simultaneously emphasizing the airline's affiliation with the Lufthansa Group through the quality of the materials and the precision of the workmanship.
A key technical element of the new interior is the implementation of Human Centric Lighting. This intelligent lighting system dynamically adjusts the color temperature and brightness inside the cabin to the passengers' natural circadian rhythms. By simulating daylight phases and smooth transitions during night flights, it aims to enhance well-being and minimize the effects of jet lag. This technology, previously used primarily in state-of-the-art long-haul aircraft such as the Airbus A350 or the Boeing 787, is now being introduced to Discover Airlines' proven A330 fleet.
Upgrade of passenger classes
In Economy Class, the focus is on optimized space utilization. Newly designed seats with narrower backrests provide significantly more legroom while maintaining the same seat pitch. This is complemented by an improved backrest recline angle and a six-way adjustable headrest. Passengers requiring more space still have the option of reserving seats with considerably more legroom in the front rows of Economy Class.
The Premium Economy Class, which has proven to be particularly popular in recent years, is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade. Discover Airlines will now be using a hard-shell design. The key advantage of this construction is that the seat reclines within the shell, thus ensuring that the personal space of the passenger behind is not compromised. An integrated leg rest and a discreet privacy screen significantly enhance privacy. This positions the airline at the forefront of the international leisure travel segment, where a dedicated premium intermediate class is increasingly becoming the standard for discerning leisure travelers.

Revolution in Business Class and introduction of a suite
The most significant change is in Business Class. Discover Airlines is abandoning its previous configuration and introducing a 1-2-1 seating arrangement. This guarantees every passenger direct aisle access, a crucial quality criterion in modern aviation. Approximately half of the seats are arranged as pairs, which can be separated by an adjustable privacy divider. The seats convert into a flat, two-meter-long bed as usual, but thanks to optimized paneling, they offer significantly more storage space and protection from cabin noise.
A completely new product is the Business Class Suite in the first row. With 1,20-meter-high sliding doors, Discover Airlines is setting a new standard for comfort on holiday flights. These suites feature 32-inch monitors, extended legroom, and additional storage space. An exclusive culinary offering for suite guests completes this premium experience. With this offering, the airline is targeting a customer segment that doesn't want to forgo the comfort of First Class, previously found primarily on traditional scheduled flights, even on their way to their holiday destination.
Digital infrastructure and connectivity at the highest level
In terms of entertainment and connectivity, the airline is undertaking a radical overhaul. Every seat in all three classes will be equipped with 4K touchscreens featuring a Bluetooth interface. This allows passengers to connect their own wireless headphones to the in-flight entertainment system. While USB-C ports will become standard in Economy Class, Premium Economy and Business Class will also offer traditional power outlets and wireless charging pads for mobile devices.
Discover Airlines is a technological pioneer in internet access. Its entire A330 fleet is being retrofitted with the Starlink satellite system. Compared to conventional systems, Starlink offers significantly higher bandwidth and lower latency, enabling internet access above the clouds with a quality comparable to broadband connections on the ground. Particularly noteworthy is the plan to offer this service free of charge to passengers in the future, representing a significant differentiator in the competition for long-haul passengers.
Economic significance and market development
The investment, in the hundreds of millions, underscores the confidence of parent company Lufthansa in its subsidiary. Since commencing operations in 2021, Discover Airlines has become a stable pillar in the leisure travel market, operating from its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. CEO Ulrich Lindner emphasizes that the modernization is a clear commitment to the airline's growth strategy. In a market environment where leisure airlines increasingly compete with the offerings of established scheduled carriers, high-quality aircraft are essential to securing market share in the premium tourism sector.
After the conversion, each aircraft will have a total of 288 seats. This configuration reflects a balanced mix of volume in Economy Class and a strong focus on the premium segment. With 30 seats in Business Class and 31 in Premium Economy, Discover Airlines is specifically targeting vacationers willing to pay extra for added comfort. The phased conversion of the 16 aircraft by 2028 also ensures that operations can continue without major capacity constraints.
With this modernization program, Discover Airlines is catching up with the technological market leaders and preparing for the challenges of the coming decade. The combination of proven Airbus technology, state-of-the-art cabin design, and digital innovation makes the airline an attractive long-haul player, further blurring the lines between classic charter flights and modern scheduled services.
