Austrian tourism suffered massively in the previous year from the flies of the corona pandemic, because according to Statistics Austria, the accommodation companies recorded a decrease of 35,9 percent to 97,9 million overnight stays. That put you at the level you had at the beginning of the 1970s.

The number of people who have stayed in tourist accommodation does not need even more. The establishments recorded 45,8 percent fewer guests and thus only had 25 million vacationers. With a decline of 22,6 percent (commercial) and 23,6 percent (private landlords), landlords of holiday apartments got off better than hotels and guest houses.

The appeal by the Austrian federal government that one should go on vacation in Germany, could not even begin to compensate for the sharp decline in international tourists. Around 15,1 million holidaymakers came from abroad - a decrease of 52,7 percent - and the remaining 9,94 million came from Germany. Despite the government's appeal, tourism within Austria could not register a “boom”, but even collapsed by 30,5 percent. Thus, the strategy of the short government was unsuccessful.
