In the first half of 2021, a total of 423.244 passengers used Dortmund Airport for their trip. That is 22 percent less than in 2020 and 67 percent less than in the pre-crisis year 2019. From January to June 2021, 12.594 planes took off and landed at Dortmund Airport, 16 percent more than in the same period of the previous year.

Due to the lockdown and the risk status of many countries, the DTM recorded a very weak first quarter of 2021. Only just under 121.000 passengers used the airport during this period. 75 percent less than in the first quarter of 2020. With the changeover to the summer flight schedule at the end of March, the number of passengers rose to almost 60.000 in April. Traffic development picked up further in May. A good 84.000 passengers used the airport this month.

“Even if we have seen a positive trend since March, June in particular brought us a noticeable recovery,” says airport manager Ludger van Bebber. “With a good 158.000 guests, significantly more passengers used our airport in June than in the entire first quarter. But even in June 2021 we are still a long way from our pre-crisis level. In June 2019 we welcomed around 246.000 passengers to our airport. "

“Nevertheless, we are on the right track. We are currently noticing that the increasing vaccination rate and the falling number of infections, also in our target countries, are leading to a rapidly increasing demand. The newly introduced routes in May and June also boosted demand. In the summer vacation that has just started, we are expecting over 250.000 passengers, ”concludes van Bebber.
