The 2.000-meter runway should be fully used in the future. Main customer Wizzair has been pushing for the use of Airbus A321 for some time, but this is currently not possible.

The only runway in Dortmund is 1.700 meters long and therefore too short, especially for the Airbus A321s requested by important customers. However, by relocating the touchdown point, the airport can “get out” an additional 300 meters. According to the authorities, a corresponding application has now been submitted to the District Government Office in Münster.

Structurally, the runway is already 2.000 meters long, but due to the so-called landing threshold, only 1.700 meters can actually be used at the moment. A real extension currently does not appear politically feasible, which is why the management of Dortmund Airport is now trying to be able to use the full length of the runway. In particular, the Hungarian low-cost airline Wizzair is said to be putting pressure on this because the carrier is pushing for the use of the Airbus A321.

The competent authority only announced that the application would now be examined and then decided which procedure had to be initiated. The Münster district government gave no information about the chances of success.
