During construction work for a railway tunnel a data line used by Lufthansa was "dragged away". As a result, it is found to the unavailability of numerous IT systems. Many flights by the crane and by group subsidiaries have failed.
The Lufthansa Group is now starting to start up its systems and flight operations again. Disruptions such as cancellations and delays are expected to continue throughout the day. Flight operations are expected to be largely normal for Thursday, February 16, 2023.
However, the Kranich Group has a completely different problem to deal with: many passengers, especially transfer passengers, are stranded and not all can be rebooked on flights on Thursday. On Friday, February 17, 2023, due to a warning strike called by the Verdi union, the turnstiles Munich and Frankfurt am Main not use. Both airports have already announced that they have to go offline because of the industrial action. The consequences of the IT failure – combined with the upcoming Verdi strike – will therefore have a negative impact on passengers for a few more days.
