At the last meeting of the Supervisory Board of Flughafen Dortmund GmbH in 2021, airport boss Ludger van Bebber presented the preliminary traffic figures for 2021.

From January to October 31, 2021, a total of 1.385.801 passengers used Dortmund Airport for their journey. This corresponds to an increase of 24 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. In the summer months, Dortmund Airport was able to achieve values from the pre-crisis year 2019 and maintained this positive trend until autumn. In October, 235.974 passengers were carried, only around 5 percent fewer than in October 2019. In a nationwide comparison, Dortmund Airport was able to recover best from the corona-related slump: the traffic volume at German airports averaged 53 percent compared to 2019.

“Due to the lockdown in spring, the effects of the corona pandemic were felt especially in the first half of the year. Demand was subdued and only recovered slowly, ”says airport boss Ludger van Bebber, summing up the first half of the year. "That made the rapid increase in passenger numbers from July all the more gratifying - even if that presented us with some challenges."

In the summer season 2022, Eurowings is expected to offer the extended offer from summer 2021 again from Dortmund. In addition, the German-Turkish airline Sun Express has announced that it will be expanding its range of routes from Dortmund: the destinations Antalya and Izmir will be served with increased frequencies in some cases, plus a third destination, Zonguldak. In addition, Wizz Air remains a strong partner even without a base at the Ruhr area airport and will continue to offer a wide range of services from Dortmund for the summer flight schedule. For the full year 2021, Dortmund Airport expects a passenger volume of around 1,7 million passengers.
