In direct comparison with the time "before Corona", only a few Airbus A380s are currently in commercial use. Some operators no longer want to reactivate the super jumbos or have not yet made a final decision. The EASA, however, requires an additional check in an Airworthiness Directive and suggests maintenance work.
Section 19 in the rear area of the Airbus A380 is specifically affected. The authority points out possible deficiencies that could result in the connection between the hull and the structure not being able to withstand the loads. There should at least be the possibility that in this area of the Airbus A380 signs of fatigue, which could be safety-relevant, occur.
By means of airworthiness instructions, all operators are now requested to check their A380s and to improve them according to the recommendations of EASA. The order will come into force on October 5, 2021. Those machines of this type that are currently in commercial use should be checked as soon as possible. For the A380s that are in Long Time Storage, the work must be carried out at the latest before reactivation. It can therefore be assumed that many super jumbos will only get the improvements later or possibly never, because numerous A380s are thriving due to a lack of interested parties.
