Stricter entry regulations have been in force in Austria since midnight. Vaccinated people in particular now have to pay attention to a few things in order to be unavoidably put into quarantine. The principle that two vaccinations are sufficient to qualify as "fully vaccinated" has been dropped.

The Ministry of Health, headed by Wolfang Mückstein (Greens), told Aviation.Direct that only people who have already received a booster vaccination can enter Germany without the additional PCR test. The PCR testing does not necessarily have to be carried out abroad, but alternatively the free offers in Austria can be used within 48 hours.

For a better understanding, fictitious case studies are shown here:

1. Person who has been vaccinated three times

In this case, you have already received the so-called booster vaccination and do not need an additional PCR test for entry. There is also no quarantine. The so-called pre-travel clearance does not have to be completed. Caution! If you come from so-called virus variant areas then different regulations apply.

2. Person vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson and then boosted with Moderna or Pfizer

In this case, the same rules apply as for people who have been vaccinated three times (see point 1).

3. Person who has been vaccinated twice

Apart from the special case described in point 2, a negative PCR test is required in addition to proof of vaccination. If this cannot be presented or if you want to be tested in Austria, you have to fill out the so-called pre-travel clearance. The PCR test must then be carried out within 48 hours of entry. You are in quarantine until the findings are available. Caution! If you come from so-called virus variant areas then different regulations apply.

4. Recovered without vaccination

In this case, the same provisions apply as set out in point 3

5. Recovered with vaccination

In this case, the same provisions apply as set out in point 1. It should be noted that a second vaccination may be necessary if the period of time described in more detail in the regulation has been exceeded. Caution! If you come from so-called virus variant areas then different regulations apply.

6. Unvaccinatedr

Regardless of whether you can present a negative PCR test on entry or not, a ten-day quarantine must be started. If you enter Austria “without PCR”, you have to have a PCR test carried out in Austria within 48 hours. The so-called Friday test is possible from the fifth day after entry. If the result is negative, the segregation is ended. Free testing is only allowed using PCR. Caution! If you come from so-called virus variant areas then different regulations apply.

Different regulations generally apply to commuters, pregnant women and school-age children.

if you work or study in Austria, do you also need a PCR test?
    When visiting family?

    • Jan Gruber, 25. December 2021 @ 13: 34

      Dear Ms. Werner,
that depends on whether you have been vaccinated 3 times or have recovered and refreshed. If not, then you need a PCR test. You can do this within 24 hours after entering Austria and take advantage of the free offers. If you enter the country without three vaccinations or 2G + PCR, you will need to fill out the Pre Travel Clearance. You can then do the PCR test in Austria, for example, in a pharmacy or using the gargle throw-in kits of the federal states.

How long does the third vaccination, i.e. the booster vaccination, have to be before to enter / so that it is valid? does it apply from the first day or after 14 days or so?

    • Jan Gruber, 3. January 2022 @ 14: 23

      Unfortunately 14 days.

  • Elisabeth Stellmacher, 3. January 2022 @ 12: 25

We have recovered; but that was more than 180 days ago (March 2021).
In the meantime we have been vaccinated twice (2nd vaccination on December 2th, 28.12.21st).
Do we still need a PCR test when entering Austria from Germany?

    • Jan Gruber, 3. January 2022 @ 14: 23

Recovering + 2x vaccinated is equivalent to 3x vaccinated according to the immigration regulations. So you would not need any additional PCR.

  • Katrin Kramer, 7. January 2022 @ 16: 02

Our 10-year-old daughter will be vaccinated twice before the ski holiday at the end of February (2nd vaccination in mid / end of January). Does she then need a PCR test upon entry or is there an exception for children under 12?

    • Jan Gruber, 7. January 2022 @ 17: 03

Since the entry requirements often change with a short lead time, we cannot give you an answer as to what will apply at the end of February 2022. We therefore kindly ask you to contact us again around a week before your departure.

    Hallo,
is a PCR test necessary for a pregnant woman who has been vaccinated twice? And if so, can I do it in Austria (free PCR gargle test)?
    Many thanks for the answer

There are exceptions for pregnant women. PCR tests can also be carried out in Austria within 24 hours and the free PCR gargle tests can also be used for this purpose.
The exception for pregnant women is set out in the Entry Ordinance under Section 6 (5):

At the moment there are entry regulations with 2G+.
Is it correct if you have had the convalescent status for less than 90 days that you do not need a PCR test to enter the country? Many Thanks

  • Andrea L , 10. February 2022 @ 09: 52

    Hello.
Is it correct that you don't have to do a PCR test for entry if you have a convalescent status that is not more than 90 days old? Many Thanks

    • Jan Gruber, 10. February 2022 @ 10: 18

Austria does not have a 90-day period for those who have recovered. Only Germany has that.
If a PCR test is necessary, you can have it done free of charge after entering Austria. In Austria, PCR tests are free of charge at official locations (pharmacies, throat kits, test streets, etc.).
The exact details of the entry regulation can be found in the official version under this link: Entry Regulation (RIS)
