Golf carrier Emirates Airline has so far flown around 50 million doses of Covid vaccines around the world. There were also around 100 tons of syringes on board the aircraft. The carrier puts the weight of the vaccine at around 220 tons, which were carried on around 150 flights to 50 destinations over Dubai.
“Emirates SkyCargo is proud to have reached the milestone of 50 million COVID-19 vaccine shipments just before World Health Day. As a socially responsible global air cargo carrier, our efforts over the past year have always been focused on helping people around the world, and especially in developing countries, recover from the devastating effects of the pandemic. We have led the efforts of the international air cargo industry and worked with our partner organizations in Dubai to quickly distribute COVID-19 vaccines to the rest of the world via Dubai, ”said Nabil Sultan, Emirates Divisional Senior Vice President.
In October 2020, Emirates SkyCargo set up an EU GDP-certified airside hub for the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines at its hub in Dubai. With its modern infrastructure and extensive warehouse capacities, Emirates SkyCargo was able to fly in large quantities of COVID-19 vaccines from the manufacturing sites, store the vaccines in Dubai and then make regular deliveries to developing countries with limited cold chain infrastructure.
In January 2021, Emirates SkyCargo partnered with leading Dubai-based companies such as DP World, International Humanitarian City and Dubai Airports to form the Dubai Vaccine Logistics Alliance to leverage Dubai's strategic advantages as a global distribution center for COVID-19 vaccines. In February 2021, Emirates SkyCargo signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UNICEF to prioritize the shipment of COVID-19 vaccines in support of the Covax facility, which aims to ensure the equitable global distribution of vaccines.
