While other airports can barely stay afloat, Mönchengladbach Airport is experiencing its second spring despite brief slumps.
At the end of 2018, Mönchengladbach Airport recorded more than 40.000 aircraft movements per year for the first time in five years. At the end of this year, even the 45.000 mark can be cracked. "That is encouraging, because it is a clear sign of a sustained upward trend even in difficult times," said Ulrich Schückhaus, Managing Director of the airport company.
In September, a traffic increase of 29 percent was counted compared to the same month last year. By the end of October, an overall increase in traffic of 13 percent compared to the same period last year was achieved. There are two main reasons for this: Both the school flight operations and the maintenance business contribute to these positive results. The school flight operations alone would make up around 60 percent of the total flight volume, as they say.
Business flights have also increased. Those who can afford it in Corona times get on a private plane instead of a larger airliner - if they take off at all. This also results in an increased demand for maintenance. "The maintenance business was a growing branch of business at MGL Airfield even before the corona pandemic, and the trend is growing," explains Managing Director Franz-Josef Kames.
