With air traffic in Europe already five percent higher than last year, Eurocontrol and its partners have finalized a strategy to manage the expected increase in summer 2025. The plan aims to address capacity constraints and uneven growth in various regions, particularly in key air traffic control centers such as Marseille, Munich, Barcelona, and Athens.
The five-point plan focuses on providing committed capacity, mitigating weather impacts, using realistic and consistent flight schedules, prioritizing first departures, and ensuring feasible flight schedules. If effectively implemented, the average flight delay could be reduced from 2,44 to 2,02 minutes. However, this target remains significantly higher than the EU target of 0,9 minutes per flight.
Despite these efforts, delays are expected to increase significantly during extreme weather conditions, potentially costing airspace users up to €20 million in a single day. Eurocontrol emphasizes the need for shared responsibility and strict adherence to the plan to minimize disruption to travelers.
