The entry and quarantine regulations issued as a result of the Omicron Corona variant have had a major impact on air traffic throughout Europe. Preliminary figures from Eurocontrol show that the volume in January 2022 was around 30 percent below the pre-crisis level.
The winter months are considered complicated in European aviation even without a corona pandemic, because there are traditionally fewer flights than, for example, in midsummer. At first, the airlines were confident that they would get through the winter well, but Omikron has drastically reduced the number of bookings.
Many carriers have severely reduced their flight schedules, so that fewer aircraft have been seen in the European skies in the previous weeks of January. Eurocontrol believes that the effects of Omikron have been felt very clearly. The volume fell again by around eight percent compared to December 2021.
