The Lufthansa subsidiary encourages “avoid unnecessary contact at the airport” by means of web check-in, but instead of a boarding pass it is requested to collect it personally at the counter. The company says it's not a mistake, but wants “all guests to come to the counter in person”.

In the last few weeks, various airlines have been trumpeting each other in press releases when it comes to presenting their corona security measures. The use of web check-in is recommended almost uniformly in order to avoid queues and personal contacts. At Eurowings, the implementation is downright absurd, because the carrier expressly recommends using the Internet check-in, but the boarding pass must now be picked up at the counter and the carrier explicitly wants to ensure that the "guests come to the counter in person" .

The Lufthansa subsidiary explicitly requests the use of the web check-in by e-mail in order to avoid “unnecessary contact at the airport”. Here is the so-called invitation in the original sound: Dear Mr. Gruber, check in now for your flight to Stuttgart. Use our online check-in to avoid unnecessary contacts at the airport. Your safety and health is always our top priority, both on the ground and in the air. For this reason, we have already taken many measures and thus continuously increased the security precautions at the airport and on board. You can also find all the important information on the subject of "flying" in Corona times here. We wish you a pleasant flight."

During the internet check-in, you have to confirm, among other things, that you do not have COVID-19. When you click on the boarding pass, however, you do not receive the choice between PDF and a version for the smartphone as usual, but you will now explicitly pick it up at the counter at the airport. In the interview: "Your check-in was carried out successfully. Unfortunately, it is not possible to print the boarding passes for this booking. Instead, we ask you to collect your boarding passes at the check-in counter at the airport. This service is of course free of charge. "

The "service" causes "unnecessary contacts at the airport" and inevitably leads to the formation of absolutely avoidable queues at the airport. But what does Eurowings actually say about taking your own “Corona tips” ad absurdum? “There are good reasons why you couldn't print your boarding pass. Since travelers have to provide self-information at check-in due to different entry regulations and official requirements, online check-in is currently deliberately deactivated for cross-border traffic. We want to ensure that our guests come personally to the counter and make all the necessary explanations there. Otherwise it would not be completely possible, ”explains Florian Gränzdörffer, Head of Media Relations at Eurowings.

It goes without saying that no self-declarations or additional certificates are required between Austria and Germany, as there is once again complete and unrestricted freedom of movement. A normal Schengen border like in the time before Corona. Other airlines have used the compulsory break in order to be able to incorporate relevant questions into their web check-in systems. If a passenger had something to hide, it makes no difference whether he or she provides false information on a form or lies in a personal self-declaration. The only difference is that Eurowings asks you to avoid “unnecessary contacts at the airport”, but produces these and the associated queues unnecessarily in the truest sense of the word.
