Hungarian airline Wizz Air expanded its route network at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) in the summer of 2026 and has been directly connecting the German capital with the Romanian city of Timișoara since May 21, 2026.
The service operates twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays. The airline uses modern Airbus A320neo family aircraft for the approximately one-hour flight. With this new route, the airline expands its portfolio from Berlin to a total of twelve direct destinations, primarily in Southern and Eastern Europe.
The expansion in the current summer flight schedule includes three new destinations in addition to Timișoara: Bratislava, Tuzla, and Cluj-Napoca. To meet the increasing demand in the low-cost segment, the airline has also significantly increased frequencies on existing successful routes. Particularly noteworthy is the increased frequency of services to Tirana, now offering up to ten weekly flights, as well as daily service to Chișinău and Bucharest. Overall, Wizz Air has increased its available seat capacity from BER Airport by approximately 90 percent compared to the previous year, underscoring the strategic importance of Berlin as a hub for the airline's growth plans.
The reason for this capacity expansion is the group's aggressive growth strategy, which now sees it operating a fleet of over 260 aircraft. Industry analyses show that Wizz Air is increasingly focusing on destinations that are relevant for city breaks, visiting friends and relatives, and business travelers from the industrial sector. Timișoara is considered a major economic center in western Romania and benefits from its direct connection to the Berlin market. Furthermore, the airline's low average fleet age of approximately 4,6 years optimizes its operating costs, enabling it to maintain competitive low entry fares.
The London-listed company is consolidating its market leadership in traffic between Western and Eastern Europe through its expansion in Berlin. Additional market data demonstrates that Wizz Air has created the necessary flexibility to respond to the increased passenger volume at BER by stationing more aircraft at its Eastern European bases. As part of its operational procedures at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, the airline is increasingly relying on digital check-in processes to maintain stable processing times despite the significant increase in capacity. The continuation of the daily service to Varna during the peak summer months of July to September completes the expanded flight schedule.
