For many people, being a flight attendant is a dream job. It combines travel, responsibility and international contact. But the path into the cabin of an aircraft has so far been closely tied to the airline in question.

On October 14, 2024, WIFI Vienna will launch its first airline-independent training course for flight attendants, designed to make it easier to enter the aviation industry. This course, which is conducted in cooperation with Punitz Flug, not only offers in-depth theoretical and practical training, but also the EU-wide, state-approved flight attendant license. The need for qualified cabin crew is growing with the increasing number of flight connections worldwide, and the WIFI course sets an important milestone on the Austrian education market.

Revolution in flight attendant training: airline-independent training

Until now, flight attendant training in Austria was carried out directly by the airlines. Applying to an airline was the first step, followed by specific training and internal training. However, this route had disadvantages: interested parties had to first decide on an airline and were only trained after they had been successfully accepted. The new course at WIFI Vienna breaks with this tradition and offers a solid basic training that gives participants the freedom to choose an airline afterwards. The concept is unique in Austria and responds to the increasing demand for qualified flight personnel, which is fueled by the growing number of flight connections worldwide.

Safety as a top priority

The role of a flight attendant is no longer limited to looking after passengers. Safety on board is the main focus. Flight attendants are often the first and most important point of contact in the event of an emergency, be it medical incidents, smoke or fire on board or even water landings. This is exactly where the WIFI course comes in: During the 10-day training, which includes both theory and practice, participants learn essential safety measures, including first aid, firefighting, water survival training and handling dangerous goods. The course is held in English, as this is the international standard language in aviation.

A central element is Crew Resource Management (CRM), which trains crew members to work together in critical situations. These training units ensure that prospective flight attendants can act quickly, precisely and efficiently in an emergency. The practical implementation takes place in realistic training scenarios led by experienced aviation experts. Two of the course days are specifically set aside for practical units in which participants apply their newly learned skills under realistic conditions.

Qualifications and entry requirements

In order to take part in the course, interested parties must meet certain requirements. In addition to very good English skills and swimming skills, physical suitability is particularly important. This is checked by a licensed aviation doctor before the course begins to ensure that the prospective flight attendants can meet the high demands of the job. The focus is on physical fitness and health suitability, which are essential for being able to act safely in stressful situations.

After successfully completing the course, participants receive a state flight attendant license that is valid throughout the European Union. This license allows graduates to apply to various airlines and move flexibly within the aviation industry. The license is valid for five years and can easily be extended by providing proof of employment.

Increasing demand for qualified flight personnel

International air traffic is growing steadily. In August 2024 alone, Vienna Airport counted over 3,3 million passengers, and the trend continues upward. As demand for flights increases, so does the need for well-trained cabin crew. Especially at a time when air traffic continues to expand worldwide despite environmental discussions, airlines rely on qualified flight attendants who can ensure safety and comfort.

In addition to the classic passenger care, flight attendants play a central role in safety management on board. Airlines are therefore always looking for motivated and well-trained employees who are able to meet the diverse challenges of the job. These range from working with international crew to dealing with demanding passengers and dealing with emergencies in the air.

Career opportunities and prospects

The job of a flight attendant offers numerous advantages: international travel, contact with people from different cultures and experiencing a wide variety of destinations are among the most attractive aspects of this job. But the job also brings challenges, such as flexibility in terms of working hours and dealing with unusual situations on board.

"With the airline-independent training at WIFI Vienna, we are laying the foundation for a successful career in aviation," explains Christian Faymann, Institute Director of WIFI Vienna. The advantage of being independent of a specific airline is that participants can apply to different airlines after completing the course - and have a clear advantage thanks to the training at WIFI Vienna. In addition, the course also prepares participants for job interviews and the special requirements of airlines.

Ready for take-off

WIFI Vienna's new training course is an excellent opportunity for anyone who can imagine a career in the aviation industry. It not only offers in-depth training and the coveted flight attendant license, but also a solid foundation for applying to airlines worldwide. With increasing flight numbers and the increasing expansion of airlines, there are good chances of gaining a foothold in this field and starting an exciting, challenging and international career. For airlines, this means that they can access a wide range of qualified applicants who are well prepared for the diverse requirements of the job.
