Last weekend's Grand Prix caused an unusually high number of flights at Graz Airport.
Graz Airport has been under particular scrutiny over the past few days, as the Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring has resulted in more than 50 additional take-offs and landings, primarily in general aviation. Some aircraft only visited the airport for a short pit stop, others required special handling for themselves and their passengers.
"I am very proud of our team, which has mastered the past few days so well," said Wolfgang Grimus, Managing Director of Graz Airport. “We recorded the highest number of flights during a Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, and that in addition to the already increased air traffic in connection with the start of the holiday season. Our "flying lap", as it is called in Formula 1, can hardly be improved."
With around 35 take-offs and landings, the majority of flights in the general aviation sector took place with various Cessnas, Embraer Phenoms, Gulfstreams and Falcons. The largest aircraft in this segment was a Gulfstream 650. Special flights with large machines such as some Airbus, Boeing or British Aerospace BAe146 were also handled, with an Airbus 319 from ITA Airways visiting Graz Airport for the first time and four times in a row.
