Scheduled flights have not been operated at the Maribor-Edvard Rusjan regional airport for more than a year. A modern freight logistics center is now to be built there.

The Slovenian Minister of Infrastructure Jernej Vrtovec would already be in talks with potential investors, like the news portal exuaviation reported. "As soon as the necessary permits have been obtained from the local authorities and the Slovenian government, work on expanding the runway at Maribor airport and building a rail link to the airport will begin," said the minister. The project is to be finalized this year so that the building tender can be submitted next year. Maribor Airport recorded no freight traffic this year. However, 2.414 passengers were handled in the first three quarters, all of them traveling on charter or private flights.
