The Flughafen Wien Group has raised its forecast for the current financial year due to the improved passenger numbers.
The Flughafen Wien Group is feeling the recovery of the travel industry after the Corona years of 2020 and 2021. Including the foreign investments Malta Airport and Kosice Airport, the number of passengers in May was 2,7 million travelers and 2,1 million at the Vienna location five times as high as in May of the previous year, as reported by the airport operator. However, the number of passengers was still more than a quarter lower than before the corona pandemic in May 2019.
Sales of around 2022 million euros (previously: 640 million euros) and annual profits of at least 560 million euros (previously: 80 million euros) are now expected for 20. Around 22 million travelers are expected for Vienna as a whole in 2022. Including the foreign participations Malta Airport and Kosice Airport, around 28 million travelers are expected.
The significantly better business forecast for 2022 is still subject to a corona-related reservation. “The adjusted values are based on the assumption that there will be no pandemic-related lockdowns or massive traffic restrictions in autumn and winter,” said the Flughafen Wien Group. Another factor of uncertainty remains "the further course of the war in Ukraine, which cannot be estimated today, and its consequences for air traffic."
At Vienna-Schwechat Airport, the number of local passengers in May rose to around 1,6 million passengers (plus more than 500 percent) and that of transfer passengers to around 501.500 passengers (plus 248,9 percent) compared to the same month last year. Flight movements increased to 17.374 take-offs and landings (plus 199,2 percent). The volume of freight, on the other hand, fell by 2021 percent compared to May 3,9 to 20.956 tons.
Airport holdings are also on the up
The holdings of the Flughafen Wien Group also recorded a strong upward trend: At Malta Airport, the number of passengers in May soared to around 555.000 travelers (up more than 500 percent) compared to the previous year and was thus 82,3 percent of the pre-crisis level (May 2019 ). At Kosice Airport, passenger numbers rose to around 39.000 travelers (also up more than 500 percent) and were thus 99 percent of the pre-crisis level.
