Zurich-Kloten Airport will shortly resume construction work in Zone West, which was interrupted around two years ago due to the corona pandemic. A further 2023 parking areas for aircraft will be built from mid-January 14.

The project is not new as work started in February 2020. At that time, embankments, leveling and the laying of various lines were already being carried out. However, in 2020 - due to the corona pandemic - the work was interrupted and the continuation was postponed indefinitely. Among other things, Flughafen Zürich AG explains that they wanted to conserve liquidity and: “The reduced air traffic during the pandemic helped that the seats were temporarily not needed. Well, with the renewed increase in passenger and flight volume and in view of the approximately ten-year construction phase of the new Dock A, the aircraft stands will be needed as early as next year".

The resumption of work in the West Zone will start in mid-January 2023 with further works management work, which will be installed in the underground of the future stands. The superstructure of the new flight operation areas will then be realized from early summer. A total of 14 stands for scheduled and charter aircraft and a parking area for business jets will be created in the west.

Due to the redesign of the West Zone, the skater and cycle path around the airport in the west will in future be guided around the newly created area. This work will start in March. The transition from the old to the new route is seamless. The commissioning of the new stands in the west of the airport is scheduled for autumn 2024.

The spotter hill with heli grill will remain in its original location during the first construction phase. Due to the changes in the West zone, it is expected to be replaced in autumn 2023 by a new viewing platform a little further north, which will offer an even better view of the flight operations and the runway junction. According to the current planning status, a seamless transition from the spotter hill to the viewing platform should be guaranteed.
