The irregularities in flight operations in the third quarter of the current financial year, which ended on June 30, 2022, cost the Tui travel group dearly. The group lost around 75 million euros as a result.
This also meant that instead of the first quarterly profit since the beginning of the corona pandemic, a loss of 27 million euros had to be announced. Had it not been for the significant flight irregularities, the Tui Group would have been back in the black. In May and June 2022 in particular, the group had to contend with a particularly large number of flight cancellations.
The lion's share of cancellations and delays in the third quarter of the current financial year occurred in these two months. It had about 4,8 million passengers, of which around 192.000 travelers were affected by delays of more than three hours. The Tui Group put the proportion of canceled flights at 200 in May and June 2022.
Similar to other airlines, the official communication does not include how many travelers were actually affected. It is therefore not surprising that the Tui Group communicated to the outside world that “less than one percent of the flights” had to be canceled in May and June 2022. Of the delays, less than four percent were more than three hours behind schedule.
Many failures and delays cause the group of companies considerable additional costs. Depending on the flight duration, passengers can claim compensation of between 250 and 600 euros. There may be costs for accommodation, meals, alternative transport and taxi or transfer journeys. In some cases, rented aircraft from other operators are used to transport guests. Of course, these do not fly for free either. The bottom line was that the group had additional expenses for almost 200.000 travelers in just two months. According to official figures, this accounts for around 75 million euros and even meant that no quarterly profit could be announced.
