Zurich Airport has long offered travelers the opportunity to donate their change to social projects. Currencies from all over the world can be inserted, and some passengers even donate tokens from casinos.
The airport stated that around a quarter of a million Swiss francs "come in" every year. The money is passed on to various non-profit organizations and social projects - undiminished. Since the donation boxes are getting on in years, Zurich Airport has come up with a warm new solution.
The new donation balls are heart-shaped and should also cause a stir. The "hearts" indicate which organization the money is donated to. This will be forwarded from the airport without any deductions or costs. All currencies are accepted and the donors remain anonymous. The new donation hearts have been available at a total of eleven locations at Zurich Airport since mid-November: in check-in 1 and 2 as well as in all departure areas of docks A, B, D and E.
A team of nine volunteers empties the donation containers and sorts out the notes and coins. Over the past 13 years, notes came from a total of 239 countries. This also includes currencies from countries that no longer exist today, including Yugoslav dinars, Biafra pounds and marks from the GDR. Gold and silver coins have also been dropped. Time and again, the volunteers also find tokens from casinos and other curious donations, such as wedding rings, in the donation balls.
