Architectural firm Foster + Partners has won the tender to design the master plan for King Salman International Airport in Saudi Arabia. The new airport is expected to strengthen Riyadh's position as a global logistics hub, boosting transport, trade and tourism, and acting as a bridge between East and West.
“Looking to the future, the new King Salman International Airport reimagines the traditional terminal as a single concourse with multiple entrances. The terminal is highly site-specific, connecting passengers to the city's sensory experiences, with natural elements, dim lighting and state-of-the-art facilities,” said Foster boss Luke Fox in a first statement.
The new Riyadh airport is to be built on an area of 57 square kilometers. If the current plans are implemented, the airport would then be one of the largest in the world. Six parallel runways and an extremely large terminal are planned. The airport is expected to accommodate up to 2030 million travelers by 120 and 2050 million travelers by 185 with a capacity of 3,5 million tons of cargo.
The future airport is also to become the home base of the planned airline RIA. This is to operate a hub on site, which is intended to compete with Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, among others. the preppreparations are already in full swing, although the plans are said to have no impact on Saudia, which is also state-owned.
