The beginning upward trend in passenger numbers continued in June despite the still significant effects of the COVID-19 pandemic: Frankfurt Airport counted around 1,78 million passengers.

This corresponds to an increase of almost 200 percent compared to June 2020. In the reporting month, the falling incidence values and the lifted travel warnings once again had a positive effect on demand. For the first time since the beginning of the crisis, more than 80.000 passengers traveled via Frankfurt Airport on two days in June.

Nonetheless, the same month last year shows a low comparative value, as air traffic fell sharply in the past year as a result of the increasing number of infections. Compared with June 2019, Frankfurt Airport once again recorded a significant decrease in passenger numbers of 73,0 percent in the month under review. The cumulative number of passengers over the first half of 2021 was around 6,5 million. This corresponds to a decrease of 46,6 percent compared to the same period in 2020 and 80,7 percent compared to 2019.

Cargo volume increased despite a lack of capacity

The freight volume increased again by 30,6 percent to 190.131 tons and thus reached the second highest value in June. This corresponds to an increase of 9,0 percent compared to June 2019. The number of flight movements increased by a good 2020 percent compared to 114 to 20.010 take-offs and landings. The total of the maximum take-off weights grew by 78,9 percent to around 1,36 million tons
