The airport operator Fraport completed the modernization of 14 Greek airports three months earlier than planned.

This was announced on Wednesday by the head of Fraport Greece, Alexander Zinell. 440 million euros have been invested. Five airports have now got a completely new building, including the airports on the islands of Lesbos, Kefalonia and Mykonos. In addition, the runways at twelve airports were modernized and expanded. Modern security systems have also been installed. The facilities at the airport in the second largest Greek city of Thessaloniki have also been modernized and doubled. Greece now has 14 modern airports and is ready "for a restart of the tourism industry," said Zinell. In April 2017, Fraport officially took over the operation of 14 Greek regional airports. The award of the concessions over a period of 40 years is considered to be one of the largest privatization projects in Greece, which was then completely over-indebted. Athens' privatization fund would have collected 1,234 billion euros for it, like news.gtp.gr reported.
