With effect from June 1, 2022, Austria's Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) will also drop the mask requirement on public transport. This also includes airport terminals and aircraft cabins. Mouth and nose only have to be covered if there is a corresponding instruction from the government of the destination.

Rauch originally wanted to stick to the fact that FFP8 masks must be worn on public transport and in so-called essential trade until at least July 2022, 2. Even two opposition motions for abolition were rejected by the governing parties ÖVP and Greens in the National Council last week. However, the public pressure that has been exerted in recent weeks by the Chamber of Commerce, trade association and some experts, whose recommendations have deviated from the government line, is likely to have been too great.

However, Johannes Rauch expressly does not want to speak of a final abolition of the FFP2 mask requirement, but his official wording is that there is only a “summer break”. He also emphasized during a press conference that he assumes that there will be a comeback of the FFP2 mask requirement. He did not give an exact time, but one can assume that it could be sometime in autumn or winter 2022.

From June 1, 2022, you only have to wear the FFP2 mask in hospitals, retirement homes and comparable medical facilities in Austria. You will no longer need an FFP2 mask on board trains, planes, buses, trams, subways and other public transport. The same also applies to supermarkets, banks, post offices, drugstores and other shops that were previously assigned to the so-called essential trade. The FFP1 mask requirement will also no longer apply in train stations, bus and airport terminals as of June 2022, 2.

Austria is quite late in taking this step compared to other European countries. On the positive side, unlike in Germany, there is no “split”: In the Federal Republic, there is no mask requirement on the infrastructure, i.e. airport terminals and train stations. In the vehicles and planes, however, yes. This occasionally leads to confusion, so that the MNS obligation is sometimes only sporadically complied with at best.
