Change of leadership at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport: René Steinhaus takes over as managing director

A planned change in operational management took place at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport on May 1, 2026. Rüdiger Franke stepped down as Managing Director as scheduled and transferred responsibility to René Steinhaus.

Franke had been at the helm of Hunsrück Airport since its acquisition by the Trier-based real estate group Triwo in the spring of 2023. Under his leadership, the company was stabilized after its insolvency phase and strategically repositioned through investments in infrastructure and the reactivation of disused areas. The expansion of the cargo business and securing the partnership with the low-cost carrier Ryanair were particularly significant achievements during his tenure.

The new managing director, René Steinhaus, is a well-known figure in the industry and possesses extensive experience in managing regional airports. He previously held a management position at Hahn Airport and is now returning to the role of managing director. His task will be to continue the established growth trajectory and further increase the airport's capacity utilization. A key focus will be on diversifying the flight schedule to attract additional charter and scheduled flights for the Hunsrück region and the adjacent Rhine-Main area, in addition to the dominant low-cost carrier segment.

Economically, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport currently faces the challenge of maintaining its position in a highly competitive market environment. While cargo volume remains stable thanks to the establishment of specialized logistics companies, the passenger business requires continuous acquisition efforts. Steinhaus will also have to drive forward the modernization of the terminal facilities to make handling processes more efficient. On the occasion of the change in management, the shareholders of the Triwo Group emphasized that they are relying on a combination of proven continuity and new impetus to strengthen the market position of Rhineland-Palatinate's only commercial airport with a 24-hour operating permit.

Besides operational management, the airport's political standing also plays a crucial role in its future. Hahn Airport benefits from its unrestricted night flight permit, which makes it particularly attractive for international logistics chains. Industry experts expect the new leadership to focus more on marketing the surrounding commercial properties in order to position the airport as a comprehensive business location. Steinhaus takes office at a time when the aviation industry is experiencing a significant upward trend after the years of crisis, providing scope for the announced growth strategy.
