The book "Moments of Taste", which promises discounts in over 100 top Austrian restaurants, has been available for a few weeks. According to the publisher, the print run is limited to 3.000 copies. Savings of up to 6.000 euros in total are promised. But how does this discount book actually "work"?
"Moments of Taste" is not a new invention, as comparable offers from various providers have been available in Germany for some time. In its current form, the Austrian version, which is published by Culinarius Publishing in collaboration with American Express, is new to the Alpine republic. It is available for purchase at this link and through distribution partners such as American Express for 129 euros.
High-priced and inexpensive top gastronomy represented
At first glance, the price seems high, but this is put into perspective when you consider the discounts you receive. For example, if you present a voucher included in the book, you only have to pay 380 euros for a multi-course meal for two people in a top-rated restaurant instead of 190 euros.
In general, the book is dominated by high-priced, top-class restaurants, so it is an ideal opportunity to treat yourself and your loved ones to something that you might not have done otherwise, not least for cost reasons. However, it also includes cheaper but still well-known restaurants. For example, one provider offers a multi-course meal for around 35 euros (for two people together). So there is something for every budget and who knows, maybe you can also make siblings, parents or good friends happy with one or two standalone vouchers.
The "Moments of Taste" book is large-format and has a high-quality binding. The participating restaurants are presented in detail - including photos. The discount coupons are located on the left and right edges. These must be torn out and handed over to the service staff at the restaurant when they are used. It is therefore not necessary to take the thick and heavy book with you on every visit.
It should be noted that not all vouchers can be redeemed at any time. Some restaurants have exclusion periods. These are clearly printed on the respective discount voucher and usually also state the amount that you have to pay for the menu directly in the restaurant. With a few exceptions, the vouchers are all valid from the beginning of January 2025 to December 31, 2025. But how do you claim the discount?
When making a reservation, please mention the “Moments of Taste” book
The publishers recommend that you make a reservation in advance, for example by phone or email, directly at the restaurant of your choice. When you first contact the restaurant in question, you should mention the keyword "Moments of Taste 2025" so that the restaurateurs can prepare accordingly. It varies; in some establishments the menu can be put together ala carte, in some you can choose from the chef's pre-made options, and in others the voucher is only valid for a very specific menu. Regardless of this, the following applies: two people eat, but only one has to pay. Drinks are usually not included, unless the voucher explicitly states otherwise.
After making a reservation, you can then look forward to visiting the restaurant. There, you hand over the voucher you have previously removed from the discount book to the service staff and enjoy a culinary treat. Holders of American Express cards with Platinum status or higher may receive additional discounts in those restaurants marked with the Amex logo in the book, depending on their card contract. However, only Amex customer service can provide precise information on this, as the card contracts can sometimes differ enormously.
Discounts in all federal states, except Vorarlberg
The publisher estimates the number of participating establishments to be over 100. The vast majority of these are located in the federal capital Vienna. With the exception of Vorarlberg, however, there are also acceptance establishments in all federal states. This means that a day trip can definitely be combined with a delicious dinner in a good restaurant.
The book is certainly an interesting Christmas present for people who enjoy good food. Since it contains so many restaurants, there is nothing wrong with getting together with relatives, friends or colleagues and buying a book together and sharing it or reading it together.
