The self-proclaimed climate protectors of the "last generation" struck at the airports in Berlin-Brandenburg and Munich on Wednesday. In Bavaria, the glue was unpacked on the northern runway. This time, the Federal Police intervened quickly and was also able to prevent further illegal access to the apron.
Just the fact that Berlin-Brandenburg Airport for the second time in a few days by the self-proclaimed "climate protectors" shows that there are blatant safety deficiencies in the area of securing German commercial airports. The “Last Generation” obviously makes use of this.
The adhesive could be unpacked in both Berlin and Munich, so that the "climate adhesives", which according to various media reports were even supposed to receive monthly salaries for their "activities", could be reapplied. At both airports, the federal police arrested people who illegally gained access to the security area. The "last generation" even claimed on social media that the "actions" had been reported to the federal police. A spokeswoman for the executive denied this sharply. The claim would not correspond to the truth.
Both in Berlin and in Munich, there have again been restrictions on flight operations due to the sticking actions. Although these were minimal, it became known that a medical could make an emergency landing 20 minutes late in Bavaria. The Ministry of the Interior confirmed that one passenger on board had suffered a heart attack and due to the limited operations due to the climate stickers, an immediate landing was not possible.
According to official statements, the Federal Police in Munich was able to prevent a far greater extent, because so-called activists are said to have tried to gain access to the apron in the area of the southern runway. However, this was prevented by the executive, so that a further disruption to flight safety could be averted.
Nevertheless, the recent incidents show that all you need is bolt cutters, bicycles and glue to get to the apron of international commercial airports in Germany. This is extremely worrying, because while the climate stickers are only about disrupting flight operations, terrorists could misuse the security gaps for far more dangerous "actions". There is therefore a massive need to catch up when it comes to securing airports.
According to the federal police, those "climate protectors" who gained access to the security area in Berlin and Munich were arrested. Now it is the turn of the public prosecutor's office and the courts, because they decide on how to proceed and, in particular, whether or not pre-trial detention will be imposed pending any charges.
For the first time, there are harsh words from the federal government. Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) sharply criticized the recent actions at the two airports and described them as "criminal machinations". Furthermore: “The blocking of trajectories no longer has anything to do with legitimate protest. A democracy decides on the basis of majorities and cannot be blackmailed. The rule of law will “defend itself against the criminals”.
